What began more than 15 years ago in a backyard pool has grown into one of the community’s leading swim schools, earning Brant Waves Swim School recognition as Entrepreneurs of the Year at the Brantford-Brant Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Excellence Awards on May 7.

The award recognizes entrepreneurial leadership and business success, honouring organizations that demonstrate growth, innovation and community impact.

For the team at Brant Waves, the recognition came as a surprise.

They said they were encouraged by friends involved with the chamber, who knew the story of how their business evolved, and suggested they put the business forward for consideration.

“Given the caliber of businesses involved, we never imagined being selected,” said Craig Surrette, CFO of Brant Waves Swim School. “It’s incredibly humbling to be recognized alongside so many accomplished organizations.”

The honour marks a significant milestone for a business that started with modest beginnings and a simple mission to help children become confident and safe in the water.

“What’s really cool is remembering that Brave Waves started very simply in a backyard pool over 15 years ago, and now to see what it’s become – it’s just amazing,” said Surette.

“Through it all, what remains in place is that love of teaching and making genuine connections with families in our community. It’s what makes Brave Waves truly special.” Over the years, the swim school has expanded beyond teaching lessons to become a major local employer, providing opportunities for dozens of young people.

“Brave Waves is a true team effort built around a shared goal: helping kids of all ages build confidence in the water and strengthening water safety in our community,” Surette said.

“We’re also incredibly proud to be able to employ 70 young adults locally in meaningful roles that build skills and experience to support their future education and employment aspirations.” The Entrepreneurs of the Year award was one of several honours presented during the annual celebration of local business achievement.

Rick and Josie Mannen received the David Baxter Outstanding Achievement Award.

The Bell Community Builder Award went to Brant United Way, with finalists including Brantford Blessing Centre and Jaycee Homes Brantford.

GEM Electrical Services captured the Waterous, Holden, Amey, Hitchon Company of the Year award, with Hotline Apparel Systems and Tenaxx Logistics named as finalists.

The OLG Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award was presented to YMCA of Hamilton Burlington Brantford, while Contact Brant and Grand River Community Health Centre were recognized as finalists.

The chamber also introduced a new City of Brantford Industrial Award this year to recognize organizations investing in skilled trades and community development. The inaugural award was presented to BML Multi-Trades Group Ltd., with GrandBridge Energy and Synergy Mouldworks Inc. named as finalists.
