POLICE BLOTTER: Youth allegedly caught shoplifting, criminal harassment probe

By West Northumberland Independent staff
From an investigation that led to a criminal harassment charge, to warrant and shoplifting-related arrests, here’s a look at another rundown of recent Cobourg Police Service (CPS) calls.
‘UNWANTED COMMUNICATION’:
In late September, police said they started an investigation after receiving a report of ongoing “unwanted communication” directed toward a complainant since March 2026.
As a result of the investigation, police said they arrested a 29-year-old Prince Edward County man on Oct. 10, 2026, and charged him with criminal harassment.
YOUTH CHARGED AFTER SHOPLIFTING PROBE:
Two youths are facing charges after a shoplifting investigation.
On Oct. 9, police said they received a report of a shoplifting incident at a business on Elgin Street West. CCTV footage allegedly showed two youths concealing merchandise in backpacks before leaving the store without attempting to pay.
On Oct. 11, police reported the two youths were arrested.
As a result of the investigation, police said one 17-year-old male was charged with theft under $5,000, and a second 17-year-old man was charged with theft under $5,000, failure to comply with recognizance and failure to comply with probation.
MAN CHARGED AFTER SHOPLIFTING REPORT:
On Oct. 14, police said they received a report of a theft at a business near Division Street and Munroe Street in Cobourg. Security camera footage reportedly confirmed that an individual passed all points of sale without attempting to pay for the merchandise in his possession.
Police said they subsequently identified the individual.
As a result of the investigation, police said they arrested a 48-year-old Cobourg man and charged him with theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.
WARRANT AND BREACHES OF COURT-ORDERED ARRESTS:
CPS also said there were five recent arrests in connection with outstanding warrants and breaches of court-ordered conditions.
On Oct. 10, police said they initiated a traffic stop on William Street after observing a vehicle displaying an expired validation tag. During the investigation, officers allegedly determined the driver was in violation of a court-ordered curfew.
As a result, police said a 25-year-old North York man was arrested and charged with failing to comply with a release order.
On Oct. 11, a partner police service contacted CPS after arresting an individual wanted on outstanding CPS warrants. As a result, police said the 48-year-old Cobourg man was arrested on the strength of the warrants.
On Oct. 12, a partner police service contacted CPS after taking an individual into custody who was wanted on multiple outstanding CPS warrants. As a result, officers said they arrested a 28-year-old Cobourg woman on the strength of the warrants.
Then, on Oct. 13, while on patrol, officers said they observed a 35-year-old woman from Baltimore and a 35-year-old man from Cobourg together. Police determined that the two were breaching a no-contact condition contained within a release order.
Police arrested both individuals and charged them with failing to comply with a release order.
The service is reiterating that it remains committed to proactively enforcing outstanding warrants and monitoring compliance with court-imposed release conditions to ensure accountability and enhance community safety.
CPS continues to ask anyone with information about individuals suspected of violating release conditions and/or who are wanted on outstanding warrants to contact the service at 905-372-6821 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at stopcrimehere.ca or 1-800-222-8477.
