Voters in Goderich cast their ballots last night in the 2026 Municipal Election, and the unofficial results are in.

According to Monday night’s unofficial results, there won’t be much change for the next council term in the Town of Goderich.

Incumbent Mayor Trevor Bazinet, along with incumbent councillors Liz Petrie, Vanessa McMillan and John Thompson will return for another term on council. Joining them will be newly elected councillors Jacob Bjerg and Chris Garnier. Deputy Mayor was acclaimed by Randy Carroll prior to the election.

With only 47.9 per cent of eligible voters taking part in the municipal election in Goderich, the unofficial results were posted last night via Simply Voting Inc.

Taking 84.1 per cent of the vote, incumbent Mayor Trevor Bazinet will serve as Mayor of Goderich once again.

Surrounded by friends and family while the results came in last night, Mayor Trevor Bazinet felt gratitude and felt emotional that the residents of Goderich placed confidence in him this election.

“To receive 3,098 votes – almost 85 per cent of the votes cast – is truly incredible,” remarked Bazinet.

“I am humbled by the confidence you have placed in me, and I will never take your trust for granted. Thank you to everyone who voted, put up a sign, knocked on doors, shared a post, or encouraged me along the way.”

Filling the position of mayor once again, Bazinet wants residents of Goderich to understand that he will not use the Strong Mayor Powers, and remains committed to leadership with council.

“I believe in teamwork, collaboration and making decisions together,” added Bazinet.

“Goderich elected seven members of council, and I believe every member deserves to have their voice heard and their vote respected. I was elected mayor but not elected to lead alone.”

Of the nine candidates running for a councillor position, the following five were voted in: Liz Petrie (20.1 per cent of the vote), Vanessa McMillan (13.1 per cent), John Thompson (13.1 per cent), Jacob Bjerg (12.5 per cent) and Chris Garnier (10.6 per cent).

Election results still need to be certified, but early numbers suggest voter turnout was under 50 per cent, with a total of 3,841 of 8,017 electors taking part.

Some comments on social media from residents suggested the online voting system may have deterred voters from taking part this election.

Yet, based on the unofficial results posted last night, those who did participate in casting their ballot were quite clear on who they wanted to represent at council.

According to Bazinet, the past two years serving as mayor has reminded him how special this community is, and Bazinet says he is keen to get started on the next four years working together and building a stronger future for Goderich.

“Goderich is my home,” Bazinet stated.

“I was born and raised here, and there is nowhere else I would rather be. Serving this community is one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I am so proud to have the opportunity to continue.”

In other election news, Robert Hunking was voted as the Avon Maitland District School Board Trustee (English Public), and Alanna Fitzpatrick was voted in as the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board Trustee (English Separate).

Inauguration of the new Goderich Council is set for November 17 in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.
