It’s looking like a brand-new council for Township of Alnwick/Haldimand residents.
Sherry Gibson will lead in the mayor’s seat for the next council term, according to Monday night’s election results.
Gibson defeated mayoral candidate Mike Ainsworth by a large margin – 2,138 votes compared to 762 votes.
Ainsworth – who is a current councillor – and Gibson were the only two contestants in the race, with long-time Mayor John Logel not seeking re-election this term.
In the deputy mayoral race, current Coun. Mary Catherine O’Neill secured the win over incumbent Joan Stover and candidate Dave Forbes.
In terms of the council makeup, residents have decided on councillors Jim McCormack, Jim Hogg and Cathie Ritchie.
Voter turnout was reported at 37.9 per cent, with 2,942 of 7,759 residents casting their ballots in the 2026 election.
This is an initial breaking story for election night.
