The Central Huron Recreation Committee met recently to review an ambitious slew of community projects and events planned for the spring and summer, with a special focus on accessibility initiatives and local heritage celebrations.

The approved $40,000 budget includes funding for community programming such as paint nights, dance classes, yoga sessions, murals, a 5-kilometre run, seasonal projects, and a proposed youth pump track.

Funding was also allocated for projects connected to the Regional Tourism Organization 4 initiative and attendance at the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) Conference.

One of the committee’s upcoming events is a Father’s Day Fishing Derby planned for June 21 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Bluestone Wake Park. Community Improvement Coordinator (CIC) Angela Smith said a pond at the park will be stocked with fish at an estimated cost of $1,500.

Sponsors for the event include Robinson Electric, Canadian Tire, The Fish and Game, and Corrie’s Foodland. A barbecue lunch will also be provided for participants.

Committee members also acknowledged that Pete Mead co-owner of Run Parlour is organizing a running event scheduled for September, with additional details expected to follow at a later meeting.

Accessibility improvements continue to be a priority for the committee.  Smith reported that applications were submitted for three separate grants, including funding through the Rick Hansen Foundation for “mobi mats” at Balls Bridge.

Additional funding has also been requested for automatic door opener projects to help offset municipal contributions and potentially fully fund the project through grants.

The official launch event is tentatively planned for May 30 or 31, aligning with National Accessibility Week, though depending on delivery and weather, it could shift into June.

Next on the agenda was Sloman School Car Event (100th Anniversary), marking the historic railway school car’s legacy. Plans include a children’s education day involving local schools, a garden party, historical displays, and possibly inviting descendants of those connected to the original program.

Members discussed budgeting for books, reprints, and potential educational programming. The committee also reviewed ideas for improving accessibility at the school car site and incorporating family-friendly activities, such as old-fashioned games

Smith also noted that work is underway for “first impressions” initiative aimed at improving visitor experiences in the community.

Future recreational opportunities were also discussed, including the possibility of developing a pump track in Holmesville near the ball diamonds and soccer fields, pending financial support.

During discussions, Chair Allison Lobb expressed interest in musical swings and “wonky” chairs as potential attractions for the community, although Smith noted the swings are costly.

Lobb also shared plans to seek support from the Disney Committee for a sign at the Holmesville Cemetery and requested the relocation of the red chair in Holmesville to a nearby parking area.

Plans are also moving ahead for the return of summer programming. Member Wise said many previous instructors have agreed to return for activities including paint nights and live music.

Noting most musicians prefer Sunday performances, while other activities are expected to continue Wednesdays. Discussions are ongoing regarding Zumba classes, and local pickleball players have requested additional shaded areas.

The committee also received an offer from the YMCA to provide a yoga instructor at no cost if scheduling arrangements can be made.

Lobb requested participation numbers be tracked throughout the summer to help evaluate the success of programs.

Committee members also discussed promotional strategies, with Mayor Ginn suggesting social media and the municipal website over radio advertising as that can be expensive.

The committee encouraged organizers to coordinate future events alongside the Raceway and REACH activities to help increase attendance and community engagement.
