For the second consecutive year, Rob Cowan was the overall low gross winner of the St. Marys Golf and Country Club’s (SMGCC) Senior Men’s Invitational tournament May 27.
Cowan finished with a two-under-par score of 70 and was the only golfer to end with a score under par. The field included 97 golfers playing in good conditions, with wind picking up midway through the round.
Cowan described his reaction to capturing his second straight title in the tournament.
“It’s nice (to win two straight years),” Cowan told the Independent. “I think I played better overall this year than in last year’s tournament. I’m getting to know the course a bit better each time I play it, and I’m looking forward to seeing what next year brings.”
According to Cowan, the tournament win was a change of fortunes for him on the course.
“I hadn’t been playing well for a couple of weeks, so I’m pleased with the day,” Cowan said. “My iron play was solid and I had quite a few looks for birdie and made a couple. I didn’t have too many mistakes. I think I only missed two greens in regulation and one by more than the collar.”
Cowan added his two-under-par score was thanks to a strong eagle drive on hole number 17.
“One of the big moments of the day for me was on Hole 17. I had just three-putted on Hole 16 for bogey to go back to even and give me two bogeys and two birdies. I hit a good long drive to a good spot (on Hole 17) and hit a beauty seven-iron to 20 feet and made the putt for eagle.”
The low net winner with a net score of 64 was Merlin Malinowski. Steve Fisher, with a gross score of 75, emerged as the 50-59-year-old division winner. Bruce Brodhagen was the 60-64 winner with a 79 gross score. Rick Hebert scored a gross of 76 to take the top spot in the 65-69 division. Amongst the 70-74-year-olds, Rod Dench finished first with a gross score of 75. In the 75+ division, Brian Woods came first, scoring a gross of 80.
