Cobourg police are urging residents to remain vigilant after a recent distraction theft.

The alleged incident has prompted the Cobourg Police Service to issue an alert and reminder.

At press deadline, police said their investigation is still ongoing.

The alert follows a reported distraction theft incident involving jewelry last Friday, Oct. 2 at about 1:30 p.m. in the Parkview Hills Drive and Alder Road area near a community mailbox.

“At this time, the suspect vehicle is described as a black SUV occupied by a male driver and a female passenger,” said the service, adding anyone with information is urged to contact police.

In the meantime, police are reminding residents to be vigilant and cautious when approached by strangers.

“Distraction thefts often involve suspects engaging victims in conversation, offering assistance, asking for directions or attempting physical contact while stealing jewelry or other valuables,” explained police. “If approached by someone you do not know, keep a safe distance (and) protect your personal property.

“If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and contact police immediately.”
