A Hastings resident and youth are facing charges after a traffic stop in Cobourg last Saturday night, which led to the alleged seizure of drugs, a replica firearm and suspected stolen property, say police.

According to the Cobourg Police Service, on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, police on general patrol observed a man wearing a balaclava enter a vehicle in a parking lot on Elgin Street West. Further investigation revealed the driver was suspended from driving and subject to a firearms prohibition order, said police.

During the arrest and subsequent search, officers allege they seized about 30 grams of MDMA, a small quantity of marijuana, numerous sealed and open alcohol containers, a Glock BB gun, a knife, an Ontario licence plate, a balaclava, cellphones, and cash.

As a result of the investigation, police said Stephen Galloway-Ellis, 20, of Hastings, was charged with driving while under suspension, possession of a schedule I substance (MDMA) for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor, driving with cannabis readily available, and failure or refusal to comply with a demand.

Police also said they arrested a 17-year-old female passenger who was charged with possession of a schedule I substance (MDMA) for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000, person under 19 years having liquor, and consuming liquor in an unauthorized place.
