Ceremony remembers mass shooting at École Polytechnique

A moving vigil was held on Monday, Dec. 8, at Theatre Woodstock to mark the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique mass shooting.

The event, organized by DASO, Ingamo Homes, and OSAS, brought residents, advocates, and allies together to reflect on the ongoing issue of gender-based violence and to honour the victims of past tragedies. The program opened with thoughtful readings delivered by community advocates, each acknowledging the pain endured by survivors and families, while also recognizing the systemic issues that allow gender-based violence to persist.

The École Polytechnique tragedy, during which fourteen women were murdered in a targeted attack, was referenced as a defining moment in Canada’s collective memory, underscoring why continued awareness and prevention efforts remain vital.

Candles were raised in honour of lives lost, as well as in recognition of the courage shown by survivors. The theatre fell silent as attendees observed a minute of silence, creating a powerful shared moment of grief and commitment. After the ceremony, community organizations hosted booths throughout the venue, offering informational resources and opportunities for involvement.
