Cobourg police say a 12-year-old youth has been arrested after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving another youth.

In September 2026, the Cobourg Police Service said its criminal investigation bureau opened an investigation after receiving information that a youth was sexually assaulted in the Town of Cobourg.

On Oct. 23, 2026, a 12-year-old youth was arrested and charged with sexual assault, reported police, on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

This charge has not been proven in court.

Police said the accused was released on a Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Under the YCJA, the accused cannot be named.

The Cobourg Police Service is reminding the public that there is no statute of limitations for sexual offences, and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence. A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature.

“Police encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police.”

No other details surrounding the investigation were released by police.
