Woodstock holds flag-raising for Terry Fox

The City of Woodstock proudly honoured the legacy of Terry Fox on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with the annual raising of the Terry Fox flag at Museum Square. The ceremony marked Sept. 1, 1980, the day Fox was forced to suspend his Marathon of Hope just outside Thunder Bay. Mayor Jerry Acchione joined Steve Iorio, Woodstock Terry Fox Run Community Organizer, in leading the ceremony before a gathered crowd of residents, supporters, families, and community groups. Before the flag raising, Acchione read an official proclamation recognizing Terry Fox’s extraordinary contributions to Canada and his lasting impact on cancer research. The ceremony served as a heartfelt tribute to a young man who united Canadians in 1980 and helped establish a fundraising legacy that has now generated over $1 billion for cancer research. Woodstock’s connection to Terry Fox remains deeply rooted in local history — Terry spoke at Museum Square on July 16, 1980, during a brief stop in the Friendly City as part of his Marathon of Hope.
