SpringWorks~PuppetWorks! brings new initiative StudioWorks to Factory 163

By: Lisa Chester
A new initiative of workshops and open studio time has been developed by SpringWorks~PuppetWorks!, creating a puppetry hub where older adults or intergenerational groups can follow their curiosity in the puppetry arts.
StudioWorks is intended to be a relaxed atmosphere to gather together, share a beverage and learn about this ancient, worldwide art form. Beginning Oct. 18 and running until February, on Sundays and Mondays from 1-4 p.m. there will be materials and associated tools like sewing machines for those who are capable in a friendly, artist-led environment.
“We are really excited about it,” said Eileen Smith, artistic producer with SpringWorks. “We have had small situations of workshops since day one, but this is a focused, planned out arc of programming which is super fun.”
Last summer, during the World in a Weekend International puppet festival, there were some workshops directed toward the older adult, intergenerational set so this will appeal immensely to those who participated previously or those who would like to learn more. There is no skill required so these workshops will prove to be very popular.
There will be Open Studios so that participants can drop in and stay as long as they wish within the 1-4 p.m. window on Sunday and/or Monday and work with the materials available. Open Studios, led by Liz Collier, are by donation. Workshops will take place Sundays, and be repeated Mondays, offering options of opportunities.
“We’re imagining that the Sundays might be intergenerational and Mondays might be more adult focused. Workshops will be the same both days and you can go to both if you feel so inclined. They’re meant to be casual, you do not need to have any experience so no pressure. We will also have snacks and beverages so it can be a social and pleasurable experience exploring an art form,” said Smith.
Along with the workshops, there will be monthly talks with international artists by Zoom where you can ask questions live and open up to new and exciting avenues of artistic expression. Puppetry is celebrated internationally in so many forms: marionette, shadow puppets, hand puppets are only a few examples. Festivals happen worldwide each year and Stratford has developed an international reputation attracting the finest artists on the circuit.
Workshops begin Oct. 18 and run until Feb. 22, 2027. Workshops include light up lantern making, glove puppet making, animating puppets and Muppet puppetry, and storyboarding to name just a few. Workshops are $10.
Registration is required, and can be found at springworksfestival.ca, where more detail is provided.
