The Tavistock Royals outshot Dunnville 45-27 on the way to a resounding 7-4 victory in the opening game of the Ontario Elite Hockey League (OEHL) season.

The Royals are playing in the OEHL’s south division after the league experienced unprecedented growth during the offseason thanks to the demise of the Ontario Super Hockey League.

Drew Gerth and Patrick Vulgan had three points each to lead the offence, while newcomers Mitch Atkins and Kyle Soper added a goal and assist each. Another rookie, Joseph Clark, stopped 23 of the 27 shots he faced to earn the win. The 23-year-old played for the Elora Rocks last season

Head coach Tyson Zehr said it was a solid start to the regular season.

“I was happy with how the guys came out and played with energy right from the start. We stuck to the game plan and supported each other well. That said, we gave up a few sloppy chances that we need to clean up, but overall, it was good.”

Gerth and Vulgan have years of experience in senior hockey and have been consistent, offensive performers for the Royals. Their importance isn’t lost on Zehr.

“They’re huge for us. Their experience and leadership really set the tone, and they know how to step up when it matters.”

As for Soper and Atkin, Zehr said the pair of newcomers adds some explosiveness to an already deep offensive lineup.

“Those two are exciting to watch. They bring speed, skill and energy, and they aren’t afraid to compete. They’ve already made an impact, and it’s great to have that kind of depth this year.”

He added Clark will be an important part of the Royals but goaltending will likely be completed by community.

“He has been solid so far. We’re expecting him to play a big role this season, but we have three good goalies who will give us a chance to win every weekend.”

Next action for Tavistock is Friday night as they host another new OEHL team, the Delhi Flames. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
