The Ontario Health Team of Northumberland (OHT-N) is aiming to provide some TLC for caregivers with the launch of a new caregiver speaker and social hour series in Cobourg starting in September.

Aimed at caregivers and older adults living in Northumberland County, the free monthly series aims to equip residents with practical information, local resources and the forum to connect with others.

OHT-N is offering the program, which starts on Thursday, Sept. 17 and runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., in collaboration with St. Peter’s Anglican Church, which is located at 240 College St.

“Caregiving can bring many questions and challenges, and people shouldn’t have to navigate them alone,” said Lindsay Henderson, OHT-N project lead.

“This series is an opportunity for caregivers and older adults to access useful information, learn about the supports that are available in Northumberland and to connect with others.”

Sessions will take place on the third Thursday of each month at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

Each gathering will feature a presentation from a local subject-matter expert or community partner. It will be followed by a social hour through which participants are invited to connect and build relationships in an informal and supportive environment.

Topics throughout the series will cover a range of issues, including caregiver wellness and mental health, senior care options, healthy aging, emergency preparedness, changes in behaviour, and financial and legal planning.

The upcoming schedule includes these dates:

  • Sept. 17: Am I a Caregiver? Understanding the Caregiver Journey

  • Oct. 15: Caring for Yourself While Caring for Others: Caregiver Wellness and Mental Health

  • Nov. 19: Navigating Senior Care: Retirement Living, Long-Term Care, Home Supports and Advance Care Planning

  • Dec. 10: Staying Strong, Independent and Well as We Age

  • Jan. 14, 2027: Be Prepared: Emergency Planning for Older Adults and Caregivers, featuring a panel with local paramedics, police and fire representatives

  • Feb. 11, 2027: Understanding Changes in Behaviour: Practical Strategies for Caregivers

  • March 18, 2027: Planning Ahead: Financial, Legal and Estate Considerations for Aging Adults and Caregivers

The caregiver speaker and social hour series is open to caregivers, older adults and community members from across Northumberland.
