Drugs seized, trafficking charges laid after Northumberland OPP speed enforcement on Hwy. 401

Northumberland OPP says police have seized suspected fentanyl, meth and cannabis after speed enforcement efforts on Hwy. 401 led to a drug investigation.

On Aug. 27, at about 10:45 a.m., officers were conducted speed enforcement in the Hwy. 401 westbound area in the Municipality of Brighton and clocked a passenger vehicle at 145 km/h, said OPP.

“The driver initially failed to stop when directed by police,” said police, adding that the vehicle was later stopped, at which point, officers initiated a drug investigation.

As a result of the probe, police allege they seized quantities of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine and cannabis, along with drug-trafficking paraphernalia and Canadian currency.

Two people were taken into custody at the scene as a result of the investigation.

Police said one of the accused is a 24-year-old Etobicoke resident, who was charged with possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – opioid (other than heroin), possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine, speeding, failure to surrender an insurance card, failure to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle, novice driver failure to surrender a licence, driving with cannabis readily available, failure to stop for police, and failure to stop on the right for an emergency vehicle.

Further, police said a 26-year-old North York resident was charged with possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – opioid (other than heroin), possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine, and failure to comply with a release order.

None of these charges have been proven in court.
