Nzemeka adds his name to run for councillor

A healthcare and community service professional has filed his papers to run for Tillsonburg council.

Felix Nzemeka, 45, is studying to be a physician’s assistant, and brings with him a “a strong commitment to serving people, strengthening communities, and supporting those who may need assistance.”

“I believe that effective public service begins with humility, listening, accountability, and a genuine willingness to serve,” he said.

Nzemeka volunteers at a local nursing home, providing Christian gospel teaching and companionship to residents. He has also worked with individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction.

“I have worked with individuals facing difficult circumstances and provided free transportation to appointments for individuals who require assistance getting to essential services,” he explained of his work that is done in collaboration with Oxford County. “I support seniors in their homes by providing home-care services that help promote safety, independence, dignity, and quality of life.”

Discussions about the idea of running for council began for Nzemeka in early July, and he has been following council meetings.

“My approach: listen first, understand the facts, ask difficult questions, work collaboratively, and remain accountable to the people we serve,” he said.

His three priorities, if elected, are:

1. Healthy community - Healthcare access, mental health, seniors' services, youth development, family support, recreation, and wellness. We must improve transportation, accessibility, sidewalks, social connection, housing, and healthcare navigation.

2. Safe and caring community - Public safety, homelessness, affordable housing, emergency preparedness, neighbourhood improvement, and stronger partnerships. A safe community is one where children can play, seniors feel secure, and every resident is treated with dignity.

3. Strong economy - Agriculture, small businesses, downtown revitalization, job creation, investment, tourism, infrastructure, and responsible taxation must work together. We should encourage private-sector investment and business development while protecting taxpayers and our small-town quality of life.

Nzemeka said three priorities will guide him: can people afford to live here, can the town’s infrastructure support growth, and can quality services be provided without unsustainable tax increases.

“Together, we can build a stronger, safer, more inclusive, and more prosperous Tillsonburg for today and for the generations to come,” he said. “I believe we must continue looking beyond today, and develop a clear vision for Tillsonburg over the next 10 years. Our community is changing, and responsible leadership requires us to anticipate future needs rather than simply respond to present challenges.”
