Northumberland Film Sundays fall 2026 film series

This September, Northumberland Film Sundays will celebrate its 23^rd year of bringing the best of contemporary cinema to Northumberland audiences.

The 2026 fall film series will open on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Rainbow Cinema, marking their 301^st screening in Cobourg. NFS will screen five films on alternate Sunday afternoons starting at 3:30 p.m.

Over the years, this community arts group has offered a diverse range of critically-acclaimed films specially selected from the TIFF Film Circuit – films in limited theatrical release that would not otherwise be available locally. The organization’s mission is to showcase films of high quality, which serve to entertain, inform and offer perspectives from the world of contemporary Canadian and international cinema with a focus on stories and storytelling.

The films in the NFS fall series will transport audiences to the contemporary London arts scene, a Belgian maternity shelter, an epic 14,000-kilometre global expedition, Lagos, Nigeria in the early 90s, and a Cape Breton retirement home.

The group was founded by the late Ken Prue, a well-known local arts promoter and impresario, whose outstanding contributions to the Cobourg arts scene have left a lasting legacy. These include not only the creation of Northumberland Film Sundays, but also his unique programming at the Loft where he offered live music and specialty films including opera – and later his numerous concert productions at Victoria Hall featuring live music, particularly Jazz performers.

Northumberland Film Sundays is a not-for-profit group run entirely by volunteers, with all surpluses regularly donated to Northumberland County organizations. Since 2003, the organization has donated more than $50,000 back to the community and will be announcing the 2026 recipient at the Sept. 20 screening.

NFS is grateful for the ongoing support of its local partners, particularly the wonderful staff and management at Rainbow Cinema, as well as their amazing ticket outlets, including the Readers’ Nook in Cobourg and Bibelot in Port Hope.

Tickets for the fall series go on sale at these outlets, as well as at the Rainbow Cinema’s box office, starting Aug. 7. Ticket packages for all five films are $45 and single tickets will be available for $10 starting Sept. 20.
