Northumberland adds two yard waste collection days

By West Northumberland Independent staff
Northumberland County is giving residents another chance or two to rake their leaves and collect their yard waste before the snow flies.
The county has added two additional leaf and yard waste collection dates for December. These two additions are specifically for residents who live in collection areas three and four.
These will be the last two leaf and yard waste collection opportunities for residents across Northumberland County this year before the program pauses until April.
Residents who have regular garbage collection on Wednesday are in area three. Those who get garbage pick-up on Thursday are in area four. Residents in the rural ward of Port Hope are in area three. Households that receive waste collection on Monday are in area one. Those who receive garbage pick-up on Tuesday are in area two.
The remaining November dates are Monday, Nov. 9 for area two, Monday, Nov. 16 for area three, and Monday, Nov. 23 for area four.
The December collection dates are Monday, Dec. 7 for areas one and three, and Monday, Dec. 14 for areas two and four.
The county reminds residents to place their leaf and yard waste at the curb by 7 a.m. Bags will be collected between Monday and Friday during residents’ designated set-out week, said the county.
Leaves and grass clippings must be placed in paper yard waste bags. Each bag must weigh less than 44 pounds. Residents are asked to roll down the tops of the bags to shield the waste from the rain and snow and prevent leaves from falling or blowing out.
The county also asks people tie brush into bundles no longer than three feet and with no material larger than two inches in diameter.
