Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin describes Norfolk General Hospital as a bright, shining star in the community.
“Norfolk General Hospital is a valued community partner,” said Martin at the second annual Heart of Healthcare Gala, a NGH Foundation fundraiser, “working with our health unit.
“To be a rural community that provides excellent healthcare and has a hospital with labour and delivery, emergency access is so important and critical.”
The hospital has never really ‘stood still’ during its 100 years in Norfolk County, she said.
“It has always progressed and elevated its level of service in the community, and you can see the work that Emma (Rogers) has been doing in the past year and a half. Just great work and really emphasizing putting community focus on supporting the hospital. It’s something that needs our help every step of the way.”
In a video message shown at Saturday’s gala, Martin said the hospital touches every one of us.
“Our hospital is the heart of this community. It’s where lives are saved, it’s where comfort is given, and care is given with compassion every single day.
“And while we continue to advocate for critical provincial investments for a new hospital that will serve Norfolk County generations to come, we must also recognize the urgent needs of today,” said Martin, recognizing and thanking everyone at NGH and the Foundation.
“Their tireless efforts are ensuring that Norfolk’s voice is being heard loud and clear in the push for long term and sustainable healthcare funding… but until that vision becomes a reality, we must lean in as a community. The Foundation’s work is so important. More important than ever, especially at this time as our hospital faces the perfect storm of aging infrastructure and equipment and growing demands. They are preparing us for the future.”
Martin urged the 250 gala participants to ‘stand together’ and show their gratitude not just with words, but with actions.
“Let’s encourage our elected officials at every level of government to rise to the occasion and continue to invest in the care that we count on.
“Thank you to every single one of you for showing up here tonight and believing in the power of community. Together we will build a future of healthcare in Norfolk.”
