Oxford County MP Arpan Khanna is inviting residents to nominate individuals who go above and beyond to strengthen their communities and make Oxford a better place to live.

Nominations are now open for 20 Citizens Who Make Oxford Better, an initiative which will recognize 20 outstanding residents whose actions and contributions have made a meaningful, positive difference in Oxford County.

“Our communities are only as strong as the people who step up to make a difference,” said Khanna. “Across Oxford, there are incredible people who give their time, support their neighbours, volunteer with local organizations, mentor young people, and lend a helping hand when someone needs it most. Many of these individuals do their work quietly, without ever expecting recognition. This initiative is an opportunity to celebrate their contributions and thank them for everything they do.”

He explained the idea grew out of the Coronation Medal ceremony, which was such a heartwarming and inspiring event.

“We wanted to create another way to recognize and celebrate the individuals in our community who go above and beyond, bring hope to others, and inspire positivity through their contributions.”

The inaugural 20 Citizens Who Make Oxford Better initiative will celebrate people whose contributions reflect the very best of Oxford. This includes volunteers, community builders, service club members, mentors, local leaders, dedicated neighbours, and everyday citizens whose actions have a lasting, positive impact on others.

“Behind every strong community are people who dedicate their time and energy to making it a better place,” added Khanna. “Whether they are volunteering their evenings and weekends, supporting families in need, or bringing people together, these individuals help make Oxford the incredible community we are proud to call home. I encourage everyone to think about someone who deserves recognition and take a few minutes to nominate them.”

Volunteerism is something on the decline today, but Khanna is hopeful the initiative could turn that trend around by recognizing the people who do give so much of themselves.

“Absolutely. Volunteers are the heart of Oxford. They give their time and energy to make our communities stronger, often without expecting anything in return. Oxford is a special place because of the people who step up to help their neighbours. Through this program, we want to recognize these incredible individuals, celebrate their contributions, and inspire more people, especially the next generation, to get involved and give back.”

He added everyone has something to contribute, and even a small act of service can make a big difference.

Nominations will be reviewed by a committee that will carefully consider each submission against the established criteria.

“Our goal is to make sure every nomination receives fair, thoughtful, and thorough consideration,” said Khanna.

The awards will be presented at a special ceremony in early 2027, where recipients will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community. Additional details, including the date and location, will be announced in the coming weeks.

To be eligible for consideration, nominees must be a current resident of the federal riding of Oxford, be nominated by another individual or organization, have demonstrated a positive contribution to the Oxford community, reflect the spirit of the initiative through actions and conduct that positively impact others and the community, and be 14 years of age or older.

Residents are encouraged to nominate someone who has made a meaningful difference in their community.
