Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) wrapped up another successful summer BRAVE-F (Benefitting Rural Areas Volunteer Emergency Firefighters) screening evening.

On August 18, Gateway continued its commitment to supporting the health and well-being of rural volunteer firefighters.

The BRAVE-F initiative provides free, confidential health screenings and cardiovascular education tailored to the unique needs of volunteer firefighters across Huron County.

This summer, Gateway CERH completed five screening events at Brussels, Ethel, Seaforth, Central Huron, and Brucefield firehalls.

A total of 85 firefighters participated, bringing the program’s overall impact to 17 screening events, and more than 280 firefighters screened since the initiative began.

Each event included a health education session focused on practical ways firefighters can reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease and prioritize their long-term health. The screening event followed the presentation with volunteer nurses from across Huron County helping to measure key health indicators such as blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and more.

These screenings help firefighters identify potential health concerns early and encourage timely follow-up with their primary healthcare provider when needed. By promoting early detection and prevention, BRAVE-F helps ensure the health of the dedicated volunteer firefighters who work to keep our communities safe.

Gateway CERH extends its sincere thanks to the fire chiefs who helped coordinate each event, the volunteers who generously donated their name and expertise, and the firefighters whose enthusiastic participation continues to make the program a success.
