North Easthope Township resident Bob Lantz had an extra reason to smile following this year's Shakespeare Field Day Firefighters' Breakfast.
Lantz was the winner of the firefighters' annual 50/50 draw, taking home $500 after purchasing a ticket in support of the local department's fundraising efforts.
One of nearly 400 people who attended the popular breakfast on Saturday, Lantz said he was happy to support the firefighters and was pleasantly surprised when his name was drawn as the winner.
"For once I got lucky," he said with a smile after receiving the cash prize.
Known throughout the community as someone who can repair just about anything with a motor, Lantz has spent many years helping friends, neighbours and local organizations whenever he can.
He was also one of the founding members of the Shakespeare Optimist Club more than 50 years ago and has remained active in supporting community initiatives ever since.
Shakespeare fire station chief Greg Ankenmann said proceeds from the annual breakfast and 50/50 draw help the department purchase updated and lifesaving equipment for local firefighters.
Lantz said he was pleased to support the fundraiser and was happy to donate back to the cause.
"You never know when help from the local department will be needed by friends or neighbours," he said.
The annual breakfast continues to be one of the most popular events during Shakespeare Field Day, drawing hundreds of residents and visitors while helping support the work of the Perth East Fire department.
