Grab a camera and join St. Marys local Claire Thomas for a hands-on photography workshop where participants will learn, shoot and share.

Thomas launched her first “Intro to Photography Workshop” on Jan. 11. For those who missed it, she will be offering a second session on Jan. 25. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will take place at 428 Emily St.

Thomas recently returned from Vancouver after graduating from Langara College’s professional photography program. With her education and a decade’s worth of experience, Thomas is passionate about sharing her craft with others.

“I want people to feel more empowered and confident behind the lens,” said Thomas. “The more someone does something, the more they learn. I don’t want people to put a lot of pressure on themselves and make every photo amazing. My advice is to just get out and do it.”

Along with teaching the fundamentals, Thomas hopes her clients feel a sense of community and connection with each other while attending the workshop. Building friendships is one of the core aspects of her sessions.

Like the first one, the Jan. 25 workshop will focus on using a DSLR camera, composition basics, lighting, portrait techniques, file management and basic editing.

“St. Marys is such a beautiful town. With the falls, abundant birds and scenic walking trails, there are so many places to explore,” said Thomas. “Being in a town that isn’t overcrowded makes it even more enjoyable to take it all in.”

Depending on local interest, Thomas said she’s open to the idea of developing an intermediate workshop for individuals interested in learning more advanced techniques.

Thomas said she’s always seen herself as a visual person. Her interest in photography piqued when she travelled with her family to Peru after her mother gave her a camera.

“I just couldn’t put it down the whole trip,” she said.

Thomas shared that she’s blessed to find something that she’s passionate about.

“What makes us unique is what makes us beautiful. It’s important not to shy away from that, but to lean into it,” said Thomas. “Don’t be afraid to look at references, see what’s out there and then create your own version. Embrace your own style but also remember that understanding the basics is valuable before pushing yourself too far.”
