Apple Fest’s a tasty family festival in Simcoe

By Chris Abbott

Downtown Simcoe BIA’s first Apple Fest on Sept. 28 brought the community out to enjoy apples, cider, donuts, candy apples, pies, car show, art, games for families and more.

“We’ve been doing our Downtown Friday Night events for the past two years and we were looking for a Saturday family event,” said BIA coordinator Les Anderson.

“Since this area is known for apples, we decided to go with that. It’s our first year and it’s going to be an annual event.”

Anderson said they were pleased with the variety of vendors and activities on Argyle Street, which included an aerial truck display from the Norfolk County Fire Department (Station 1), and he expects it to grow next year as people spread the word.

“I think next year people will hear what this year was like and we’ll probably grow the vendor part of it. We had some cancellations because of the weather, but hey, it’s a great family event, we’ve got the children’s entertainment going, and it’s free to visit.

“What we really want to do is bring people downtown, show people what’s downtown. So I hope people have had a look around.”

‘Our goal? It’s for YOU to be proud of this downtown,’ states Downtown Simcoe BIA’s website.

The next big BIA event is Treats in the Streets, Oct. 26.

“It’s amazing to see the number of kids that come downtown for that event. This will be our fourth Treats in the Streets. It’s all over downtown and we invite all the businesses to participate – it’s something our downtown business owners have really jumped on, the family events. It’ll be a good success. Last year, I think we had 400-500 people.

“We also invite the businesses to decorate their storefronts. This year we partnered with the Norfolk County Fair on a (fall decorating) contest.”
