A double win for first time homecraft entrant

The Vooys family has been volunteering at the West Niagara Fair for several years. Marlene Vooys is now in charge of the photography section, helping to select the classes and assisting the judge on judging day. She also sponsors “The Jar Wrangler” class in the canning section.
Now being familiar with the Homecraft classes, “I thought it would be fun to enter, plus my family were the ones to encourage me, as my son Stephen said I have the best coffee cake. It was very much a surprise when I won,” she said.
“I actually started baking in elementary school in a home economics class. I was in Grade 6, so it’s been a few years. I only entered my coffee cake and the angel food cake and I won first with both cakes this year.”
Vooys takes home $150 for her angel food cake, sponsored by the Niagara Egg Producers. Her coffee cake earned her $50 and was sponsored and enjoyed by All Canadian Entertainment.
“I really don’t know what the secret is, and I just enjoy baking,” she said. Her cake was judged based on 50 points for flavour, smell and taste; 25 points for texture and lightness inside the cake; and 25 points for overall appearance, surface, size and colour.
