The Wagler family welcomed visitors to their Sand Hills Maple Products Farm west of Wellesley this spring as part of their annual open house in the sugar bush, offering guests the chance to enjoy pancakes, sausages, fruit, coffee and plenty of fresh maple syrup.
Held each spring and fall, the open house gives visitors an opportunity to see firsthand how maple syrup is produced while enjoying a traditional maple breakfast in a rural setting.
The Wellesley-area family has been producing maple syrup for 23 years, beginning in 2003, and for the past three years they’ve invited visitors to enjoy breakfast featuring freshly made pancakes topped with syrup produced onsite. Pancakes are prepared on the grill by Jeneve Wagler and her children, while John Wagler and his sons keep busy tending campfires and assisting customers purchasing maple syrup.
Visitors are also offered a tour of the sugar bush to learn more about the maple syrup production process and the work involved in bringing maple products to market.
Among those visiting Saturday were representatives connected with local fall fairs, including Wellesley fair ambassador Clare Koch, junior ambassador Chloe Scott, past junior ambassador Manni Hayer, junior ambassador coordinator Katie Musselman and Wilmot Fall Fair ambassador Erin Jackson. The group toured the maple bush and learned more about how maple products are produced locally.
The Wagler family produces approximately 6,000 litres of maple syrup each year and said this season’s sap run has once again been a successful one.
With warmer temperatures arriving and trees beginning to bud, sap collection for the season is now nearing completion. The family said they were pleased to welcome hundreds of visitors this spring for what they described as a true Waterloo Region maple bush experience.
