Volunteers needed to help shape Port Hope’s future

If you’re looking for a way to get involved with the community or give back through volunteering, the Municipality of Port Hope wants to hear from you.

“We are seeking representatives from the community to serve on some of our local boards and quasi-judicial committees,” explained municipal staff. “These groups play an important role in local governance by supporting decision-making and providing advice and recommendations to council (and supporting staff work plans at times).”

The time spent isn’t just about helping to strengthen the current community but also shaping Port Hope’s future and making a positive difference, noted municipal officials.

Several of Port Hope’s boards and committees include a mix of citizens and council and staff representatives, all with the goal of combining knowledge, experience, ideas and perspectives, explained staff.

For these volunteer-based positions, they’re also a chance for residents to share their skills, ideas and talents while meeting new people, providing input on strategic direction, and helping government respond to community issues and priorities, stated the municipality.

Currently, there are reported openings under the committee of adjustment, the Port Hope Heritage Business Improvement Area/HBIA, Port Hope Police Services Board, Port Hope Public Library Board, and property standards appeal committee. Recruitment for these posts is for new the 2026-30 council term – and there’s also a vacancy on the Civic Awards advisory committee.

However, there are some eligibility requirements, such as volunteers must by ratepayers or a resident of Port Hope, at least 18 years old and can’t be a municipal employee.

Applications for all of the above vacancies close on Nov. 6, 2026, with the exception of the HBIA posting on Oct. 19.
