Trillium Foundation boosts recreation in South Huron

Local representatives and South Huron staff gathered at the South Huron Recreation Centre on Sept. 14 to recognize the impact of the municipality’s recreation co-ordinator position.
South Huron created the recreation co-ordinator position in 2025 after receiving an $89,900 seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
According to the municipality, the recreation co-ordinator has been focused on designing inclusive programming, championing physical activity, maximizing local facility usage and improving overall community well-bring.
“This investment is making a meaningful difference in the lives of residents across South Huron by creating more opportunities for people of all ages to get active, connect with one another and participate in their community,” said Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson. “I’m pleased to see the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s support in helping the Municipality of South Huron expand its recreation programming, and to build a stronger and more active community for everyone.”
Since receiving the grant, South Huron has introduced 34 new recreation programs that have been attended by more than 600 participants. The municipality has also organized three open community events that saw more than 700 individuals participating and welcomed 16 instructors and volunteers who helped to deliver the new programs.
“We truly value our partnership with the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Mayor George Finch. “Their support has allowed us to boost our capacity to deliver a wide variety of rich and meaningful recreation programming for our residents.”
