Storm cuts Ingersoll Canada Day Celebrations short

On July 1, the Town of Ingersoll was set to host its annual Canada Day celebration in Victoria Park.

Despite scorching temperatures that reached a humidex of approximately 43 Celsius, the community turned out in full force. Food trucks, local vendors and families gathered to kick off the festivities before severe weather swept through the area.

At around 5 p.m., heavy rain and powerful winds moved in, forcing organizers to cancel the remainder of the event. Tree branches were brought down, traffic lights along King Street lost power, and vendors scrambled to secure their booths before the storm intensified.

"It got intense very quickly," recalled Shannon McKechnie, owner of Commonplace Books and a vendor at the Canada Day event. "I felt really lucky I had my partner with me. He had his eye on the weather and made the decision to pack up the books about 30 minutes after the market opened."

McKechnie said all of the books were safely packed away before the rain began.

"Without his attention, it would've been a very significant loss for us. Once the storm got going, the winds were so strong we, like many others, lost major pieces of our market setup."

She said two legs of their tent snapped during the storm, while many other vendors experienced significant damage to their displays and merchandise.

"A lot of our prints were ruined," said Sam Mansbridge of Aftermath Tattoo Studios.

The celebration had been scheduled to run from 4 p.m. until dusk and included a vendor market, food trucks, children's activities, an outdoor movie and a fireworks display.

Although the weather forced the cancellation of most of the festivities, the evening still ended on a hopeful note. Once conditions improved, hundreds of residents gathered to watch the fireworks, bringing the community together despite the day's unexpected turn.
