Still time to vote for your favourite pet

More than 100 local pet lovers and their animal companions are taking part in the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth's annual online Calendar Photo Contest, raising funds to support animals in need throughout the region.

The fundraiser, which runs throughout July, invites participants to submit a photo of their pet along with a short biography before campaigning for votes from family and friends. Every vote helps raise money to provide shelter, medical care, supplies and adoption services for local animals.

As the Humane Society prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, the organization continues to experience growing demand for its animal care services, community outreach programs and initiatives that help keep pets and families together.

There is still time to enter your pet or cast your vote before the contest closes on Friday, July 31. The $10 entry fee and $1 votes all go directly to the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth, helping provide care and support for animals in need.

The top eight dogs, three cats and one other animal will earn a featured spot in the Humane Society's 2027 calendar. Each winner will also receive a professional pet photo session with local award-winning studio Victor Rose Photography.

"The contest has already raised more than $17,000," said Breanna Langan, marketing and communications coordinator with the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth. "Every vote is more than a vote for a pet. It's support for local animals who need shelter, medical care and a second chance."

Langan said the contest has become a fun way for the community to support an important cause while celebrating the special bond people share with their pets.

"It's incredible to see the community engage in a friendly competition and rally behind their pets in support of this work," she said.

Many of this year's contestants have inspiring stories of their own. Several of the pets competing were once residents of the Humane Society's shelters before being adopted into loving homes. They are now enjoying the spotlight as calendar hopefuls while helping raise funds for animals still waiting for their forever families.

Last year's contest attracted just over 100 entries and raised more than $31,000. The top fundraising pets collected between $1,000 and $3,000 each to secure their place in the 2026 calendar. Organizers hope to surpass that total this year as supporters continue encouraging votes through social media and community fundraising efforts.

The 2027 calendar will also serve as a special keepsake marking the Humane Society's centennial year. Calendar pre-orders are available through the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth's website following the contest.
