Each November, Veteran’s Banners are proudly hung around the town in honour of St. Marys and area residents, past and present, who served.

The banners display photos of each veteran, their unit and the names of those who sponsored the banner. This program has become very popular, jumping from 50 banners when it started in 2020 to the 220 banners proudly displayed last year.

The banner program takes place in many towns and cities. More than ever, it is so important to see the faces of our veterans and remember and honour them for all they did for our country and for those still serving. The banners are made locally by Gerber’s Graphics and orders fill up quickly.

The Legion has opened ordering early this year to make sure everything will be in place and ready for November.

To place an order, download the form at https://rcl236stmarys.ca/remembrance/. Include the veteran’s name, branch of service and sponsor name, as well as a photo of them, preferably in uniform. The cost to order a banner is a one-time payment of $200. The form and payment can be dropped off at the St. Marys Legion and payment can be made by cash, cheque or debit.

The Legion is adding something new this year. There is going to be website pages honouring the veterans that will be recognized on banners, cenotaphs and plaques. For those who have already purchased banners in the past, families can reach out if they want details added. The pages will link to the online banner map that will be available in November where residents can search the location of each banner.

Donations towards this ongoing tribute are more than welcome and can be made by visiting the local Legion at 66 Church St. N. during normal business hours Tuesday through Thursday between 3 and 5 p.m., Friday between 12 and 5 p.m., and Saturday from 12-7 p.m.

Questions regarding this year’s banner program can be directed to Legion poppy chair Tom Jenkins at 226-661-0057.
