Special music and inspiring message highlight Grace United Church service

Special music and an inspiring message combined to make Sunday's worship service at Grace United Church a memorable one for the congregation gathered in Zion Hall.
With the hall filled to capacity, the service featured a musical performance by choir member Jillian Chesney, who accompanied herself on acoustic guitar while Marilyne Nystrom provided piano accompaniment on an instrument donated to the church by members of Hickson United Church.
Rev. Marilyn Arthur's message drew on scenes from the film, The Blind Side, encouraging members of the congregation to reach out to those in the community who may need friendship, encouragement and support.
The sermon reflected on the true story of Michael Oher, whose life was changed after he was welcomed into the Tuohy family. Arthur connected the story to the day's scripture, emphasizing the difference a caring family and supportive community can make in someone's life.
Chesney, who was born in Innerkip, is an accomplished musician and music therapist. She attended Innerkip Public School and Huron Park Secondary School before earning a music degree at McMaster University. She later studied community music at Wilfrid Laurier University and completed a master's degree in Laurier's music therapy program.
In addition to singing, Chesney plays guitar, ukulele, piano and a variety of hand percussion instruments. She now works as a music therapist with Connections in Music Therapy, based in London.
The 28-year-old is the daughter of Kathleen Hilderly-Chesney of Innerkip and the late Paul Chesney.
Nystrom, the church’s music director, said Chesney is a valued member of the church choir.
"It is a real joy to have Jillian in the church choir, who brings her musical abilities to a very talented choir ensemble every Sunday," Nystrom said.
