South Huron in a lame duck period

South Huron council is now considered a “lame duck” under provincial rules that restrict what a council can do during an election period. The lame duck status is triggered when 75 per cent of the current council might not be re-elected. All of the six council positions in South Huron have been contested by two or more candidates. Council is restricted until Nov. 14 from appointing or removing from office any officer of the municipality; hiring or dismissing any employee; disposing of any real or personal property of the municipality with a value exceeding $50,000; and making any expenditures that exceed $50,000.

Council start time kept at 6 p.m.

Updating its procedural bylaw, South Huron council has voted to keep the start time for regular council meetings at 6 p.m. There had been suggestions that the time should be moved to 5 p.m. The updated bylaw also specifies that council meetings are a maximum of three hours long, but may be extended for an hour with unanimous agreement of all members.

Graders needed quick repairs

Two out of South Huron’s three road graders were knocked out of commission during spring grading, requiring immediate repairs. One grader required a remanufactured rear axle that cost $70,612.94. The other grader needed the transmission repaired for $55,895.39. The two repairs used up 71 per cent of the equipment maintenance budget for South Huron’s transportation services department. In a report to council, transportation services manager Jeff Wolfe said equipment maintenance will be over budget in 2026 but the overall spending is trending close to budget and is being managed closely.

South Huron looking at property sale

There are no public details, but South Huron council has been considering the sale of a piece of property. After meeting in a closed session for a half hour on Aug. 10, council voted 5-2 to proceed with Option 1 as outlined in a staff report. No other details were provided and the report remains confidential. Municipal clerk Alex Wolfe advised in an e-mail that Option 1 relates to the disposition of land.

Construction values up in second quarter

The value of construction in South Huron in the April to June period was substantially higher than in the same period a year ago, according to a building department report. The total construction value reached $17.9 million compared to $12.6 in 2025. House construction led

the way with $8.7 million worth in the second quarter, followed by $3.6 million of new agricultural construction, and $2.6 million of new commercial construction.
