Shakespeare firefighters fill their boots for muscular dystrophy

By Gary West
When the first weekend of October rolls around each year, members of the Shakespeare Fire Department trade fighting fires for another important battle.
Firefighters were out in the village Saturday collecting donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, using their boots to gather cash from passing motorists as part of the annual Fill the Boot campaign.
It is a longstanding tradition supported by firefighters across the area, and Shakespeare’s department was once again eager to take part.
Firefighters stationed themselves along all four roads leading into Shakespeare, where motorists stopped to drop money into the boots and thank department members for supporting the cause.
By the end of the day, firefighters had collected an impressive $5,650.
Members of the Shakespeare Fire Department thanked everyone who contributed and helped make the fundraiser a success.
The campaign is a fitting one for firefighters. As the Nancy Sinatra song goes, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’,” but in Shakespeare on Saturday, they were made for filling.
While collecting donations, firefighters were also mindful that they could be called away at any time to respond to an emergency. Highways 7 and 8 and Perth Road 107 are among the busiest routes in the area and are regularly the scene of motor-vehicle collisions.
Fortunately, members were able to spend the day focused on the fundraiser and the people who ultimately benefit from it.
For those living with muscular dystrophy, the money raised will help support important programs and services.
Shakespeare firefighters extended their thanks to all the motorists who dug deep and helped support the cause.
