Quebec youth charged after allegedly fleeing from police, stolen vehicle incident: Northumberland OPP

A 17-year-old Quebec resident is facing serious charges after Northumberland OPP says police recovered a stolen vehicle in the Municipality of Trent Hills.
On Sept. 16, 2026, at about 2:15 p.m., OPP said an officer was on patrol in the County Road 35 area when in-cruiser automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) technology alerted them to a stolen vehicle.
“The same vehicle had earlier been observed travelling eastbound on Hwy. 401 near Cobourg and failed to stop for police shortly after 9 a.m.,” reported OPP.
Police said the passenger vehicle had been reported stolen from the Niagara region earlier in the week.
“The vehicle was last observed travelling northbound on County Road 25,” said police, adding officers later attempted to stop the vehicle at a commercial property in Hastings, but again, the vehicle allegedly failed to stop. “A short time later, the vehicle was located abandoned on Lakeshore Drive.”
The alleged incident prompted an increased police presence in the area while officers – with help from OPP’s canine unit – conducted a search, explained police.
One individual was reportedly found in a nearby field and taken into custody, but police remained in the area until about 5:30 p.m. that day.
“Northumberland OPP would like to thank local residents for their patience and co-operation during the investigation,” said police, in a follow-up release after the alleged incident.
In addition to a number of Highway Traffic Act offences, police said as a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old from Quebec was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, two counts of dangerous operation, and two counts of flight from a peace officer.
None of these charges have been proven in court. Police added that the accused can’t be named in accordance with provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
