By West Northumberland Independent staff
From a stolen vehicle recovery on Hwy. 401, to a break-and-enter probe and an impaired driving arrest in Cobourg, here’s a look at some of Northumberland OPP’s weekend calls.
STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERY:
On Oct. 26, 2026, shortly after 3 a.m., police said they responded to a report of a theft at a service station on Hwy. 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope.
A vehicle matching the description provided to police was located travelling eastbound along the highway but the driver allegedly failed to stop for officers, reported OPP.
“The vehicle was later located again on Hwy. 401 in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand where it was stopped by officers and the driver was taken into custody,” said police.
As the investigation continued, officers said they determined the vehicle had recently been reported stolen from Toronto. Further investigation also allegedly revealed a number of additional offences.
As a result of the probe, police said a 30-year-old resident with no fixed address was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft under $5,000, five counts of operation while prohibited, two counts of flight from a peace officer, failure or refusal to comply with a demand, dangerous operation, driving while failing to display two plates, driving without a proper rear light, and drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed.
‘READINGS MORE THAN TWICE THE LEGAL LIMIT’:
On Oct. 24, at about 11:45 p.m., OPP said an officer was on patrol along Hwy. 401 eastbound in the Municipality of Port Hope and observed a passenger vehicle unable to maintain its lane.
The vehicle was stopped in Cobourg, and after speaking with the driver, police said they started an impaired driving investigation. The driver was then taken into custody and transported to a nearby detachment for further testing, which resulted in “readings of more than twice the legal limit.”
As a result of the investigation, a 40-year-old Cobourg resident was charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs, driving with open liquor and operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus.)
The accused is due in Cobourg court in December and also received a 90-day licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded for a week.
BREAK-AND-ENTER INVESTIGATION:
On Oct. 25, at about 10:20 p.m., OPP said they responded to a break-and-enter report at a property on Bridge Street in the Municipality of Trent Hills.
After officers arrived on scene, one person was taken into custody, and a quantity of cash and alcohol were seized as part of the investigation, explained police.
A local scenes of crime officer attended to help with the investigation and the scene was held by police for several hours, noted OPP, adding a vehicle was also allegedly seized in connection with the probe.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 30-year-old Marmora resident was charged with break, enter a place – commit an indictable offence, theft under $5,000, assaulting a peace officer, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
The accused is slated to appear in Cobourg court in January 2027.
None of the charges in the above unrelated incidents have been proven in court.
