Northumberland marks grand reopening of Laurie Lawson Outdoor Education Centre

A “special place” in the Township of Hamilton that offers the chance to learn, explore and connect with nature is open once again.

The Township of Hamilton recently celebrated the grand-reopening of the Laurie Lawson Outdoor Education Centre, which is located at 8,000 Telephone Rd. Members of council and township staff joined Northumberland Land Trust representatives for the event to unveil the trails and natural spaces following significant restoration work.

“For generations, this special place has provided opportunities for local students and community members to learn, explore and connect with nature,” said township officials, in a recent release. “Following significant restoration work, the trails and natural spaces are once again ready to welcome visitors.”

Coun. Mark Lovshin said he has seen firsthand the role the Laurie Lawson Outdoor Education Centre has played in the community over the years.

“I’ve had the privilege of watching generations of children and families enjoy this property, just as I did when I was young,” said Lovshin.

“The Laurie Lawson Outdoor Education Centre is more than trails and forests – it’s a place where students can learn, explore and develop a lasting appreciation for the natural world. Seeing it restored and welcoming a new generation is very special, and I’m proud to see the benefits it continues to bring to our community.”

Council expressed its congratulations to Northumberland Land Trust, volunteers, donors and everyone who helped bring the community resource back to life. The release noted the Township of Hamilton is fortunate to have a place that supports outdoor education, conservation and connection to nature close to home.  

On its website, Northumberland Land Trust noted support from the community helped the campaign to restore the space and reach a fundraising goal of $150,000.

“We are excited to welcome you back and showcase the revitalized property where the trails have been restored, infrastructure upgraded, and once again safe and accessible for visitors to enjoy.”
