Motorists travelling Highway 59 south of Shakespeare encountered an unusual sight Tuesday morning as a massive turbine was slowly transported north on an oversized-load trailer.
The Siemens Energy turbine was large and heavy enough that traffic had to be stopped in both directions as the transport made its way toward and through Shakespeare.
The specialized trailer carrying the turbine featured multiple sets of wheels at both the front and rear to distribute the weight of the enormous load.
Hydro crews were also required along the route to raise overhead utility lines, allowing the turbine and transport trailer to slowly pass underneath.
Several escort vehicles with flashing lights travelled ahead of and behind the load, warning motorists and helping ensure the turbine could safely make its way along the highway.
Siemens Energy is a global energy technology company headquartered in Munich, Germany, with Canadian operations based in Oakville. The company is involved in technologies used for power generation and transmission, among other areas of the energy sector.
The turbine's destination was not confirmed.
