Man charged after vehicle stop in Port Hope, alleged seizure of 650,000 unmarked cigarettes

A North York man is facing charges after the alleged seizure of 650,000 unmarked cigarettes in Port Hope, says Northumberland OPP.

On Sept. 21, 2026, at about 2 p.m., OPP said police were called to help a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) officer during a vehicle stop in the Telephone Road Municipality of Port Hope area.

As a result of the investigation, OPP said officers seized about 650,000 unmarked cigarettes from the vehicle.

The probe has led to a 47-year-old North York man charged with trafficking in contraband tobacco, possession of unmarked cigarettes for sale, possession of unmarked cigarettes, and driving with cannabis readily available, reported OPP.

None of these charges have been proven in court.

Police said the accused is due in Cobourg court in December 2026.
