Long time Romeo Public School secretary retires after 35 years

Even though she loves her front office job at Romeo Public School in Stratford, there came a time when retirement became something Denise Kane looked forward to – and something she now gets to experience firsthand.

Kane has spent 35 years in education with a career rooted in community. During a recent meeting, she said she is turning a new page on a remarkable career, after making connections and caring for students and families for generations.

Kane was raised on a dairy and beef farm in South Easthope Township, where she learned the values of hard work, commitment and service from her rural family roots.

Those early lessons would remain with her throughout her life and career. After marrying her husband Dan, the couple made their home in Stratford, where they raised their son and became active members of the community they cherish.

Kane began her career in education in 1990 as an elementary school secretary with the Perth County Board of Education. Over the years, she says she witnessed significant changes in Ontario‘s education landscape, including the amalgamation of the Perth County and Huron County boards to form what is now known as the Avon Maitland School Board.

Throughout her career, Kane‘s journey took her through many schools and offices, including Avon, Portia, Juliet, the Perth County Board of Education office on Water Street, Northwestern Secondary School, Sprucedale in Shakespeare, Bedford and, for the past 11 years, Romeo Public School.

While the locations changed what remained constant was Kane‘s passion for supporting students, families and colleagues. She fondly recalls working alongside dedicated and supportive staff members who made each day meaningful for their students.

“I always look forward to coming to work,” Kane said. “And the relationships built over the years with colleagues, families and students made everyday rewarding.”

Among her favourite memories are the countless interactions with students and the opportunity to celebrate their achievements and successes.

Whether helping families navigate school life, assisting staff or offering a welcoming smile in the office, Kane became a familiar and trusted presence within every school community she served.

As retirement begins, Kane is looking forward to embracing a new chapter filled with opportunities for rest, volunteering and spending more time in her garden. While she is eager for the adventures ahead, she leaves her career with deep gratitude for the experiences she has shared, and the people she has met along the way.

Reflecting on her years in education, Kane says the greatest gift has been the lifelong friendships and memories made throughout her journey.
