Lichti family celebrates generations of milestones at North Easthope reunion

The Lichti family gathered Sunday at the family's historic North Easthope Township farm to celebrate a remarkable collection of family milestones spanning generations.

The reunion was held at the family homestead on Lot 15, Concession 2, where Laverne and Nelda (Schwartzentruber) Lichti began farming in 1946. Together, they raised six children on the farm, which is now owned by the third generation of the Lichti family.

Family members, relatives, friends and neighbours gathered to celebrate not one, but six major milestones.

John Lichti, the eldest of the six siblings, celebrated his 80th birthday, while brother Dan marked his 75th birthday. Twins Ruth Steinman and Ruby Barrengoa celebrated their 70th birthdays, and youngest sister Diane Lichti celebrated her 65th birthday.

The reunion also recognized two significant wedding anniversaries, with John and Norma Lichti celebrating 60 years of marriage and Roy and Mardy Lichti, who continue to live on the family farm, marking their 50th wedding anniversary.

Adding to the celebration was the return of Ruby Barrengoa and her family from Argentina for a three-week visit.

As the reunion unfolded, family members also gathered in the farm's renovated barn loft to watch the championship soccer match between Argentina and Spain on two large-screen televisions, one broadcasting in English and the other in Spanish.

One family member remarked that a reunion of this size "surely doesn't happen every year," as relatives of all ages pitched in to help prepare for the event.

Perfect summer weather allowed everyone to enjoy the outdoor celebration throughout the day.

The championship soccer match added another layer of excitement, with dozens of younger family members cheering on Argentina before Spain claimed a 1-0 victory in extra time.

The reunion celebrated not only birthdays and anniversaries, but also the enduring legacy of a farm family whose roots in North Easthope Township now extend through multiple generations.
