Hannah Fahraeus, spa manager at Illume Wellness Spa, tries on a virtual reality headset during the new Restorative Pedicure experience, which transports clients to beach destinations around the world while receiving a full spa treatment.

Illume Wellness Spa at 35 York St. is shaking things up in the wellness industry with their new and innovative technology-based spa service.

The new restorative pedicure treatment combines traditional spa services with virtual reality (VR) technology, transporting clients to beach destinations around the world through a fully immersive 360-degree experience. It is the first offering of its kind at the spa.

“Even a few minutes of beach time can help calm the nervous system and create a sense of escape and reset,” said Nathalie Malette, founder of PraiaVR Inc.

Guests relax in a private treatment room at Illume Wellness Spa, where they receive a full pedicure from a treatment bed. Beforehand, they wear a VR headset and explore a peaceful beach environment or meditation experience through the Gratitui app, created by PraiaVR Inc., a Stratford-area developer.

“It’s just like travelling to any beach in the world, sitting there, enjoying the waves,” said Elsa Fahraeus, owner of Illume Wellness Spa. “While you sit on the beach, you’re soaking your feet in a warm bath and then proceed to receive a full spa treatment where you settle into a whole new element.”

The experience begins with either a guided meditation or calming ocean sounds while feet soak in a warm, infused bath. The treatment includes detailed foot care, callus removal and a sugar scrub. While a hydrating mask is applied to the feet and legs, guests can choose between a mini scalp massage or an arm massage.

The service concludes with nail polish application and a relaxing foot massage. Clients are welcome to talk with their esthetician or rest quietly with an eye pillow.

PraiaVR Inc. worked with several local creators to bring the realistic beach experience to life.

“It has been especially meaningful to find so much creativity and expertise right here in our own community,” said Malette. “We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with artist and designer Claire Scott, digital media specialist Kris von Kleist, yoga and wellness expert Joanie Chapple and marketing professional Shannon Landreth.”

Malette added the goal was to create an immersive experience that feels authentic and transportive.

“With the help of other local creators, the brand was able to bring real-life beaches from across the world to the VR experience, offering clients a realistic experience as if they themselves are sitting on the beach,” she said.

Fahraeus said no experience with VR is needed and the treatment is open to all clients seeking a more immersive spa experience.

“Anyone can experience it, even kids,” she said. “Any clients who are looking for that extra special treatment. I say give yourself a second to come and experience it; you will be so happy you did.”

“Working with Illume has been incredible,” said Malette. “Their commitment to creating meaningful, high-quality experiences for their clients is truly inspiring. We feel honoured to collaborate with such talented, enthusiastic and genuinely caring people to bring something unique to our community and its visitors.”

When asked about her favourite destination featured in the VR experience, Fahraeus said Ireland stands out.

“The Mexico beach is wonderful, but I’d have to say Ireland,” she said. “I’ve been there before, so to be able to experience it over and over again in VR is amazing. It’s almost like you’re there in person. It’s so relaxing and truly breathtaking.”

The new Restorative Pedicure at Illume Wellness Spa is a head-to-toe sensory experience offered exclusively at Illume for $105.
