The good residents of Waterford step forward when there is a need to be met and quite often one might find local business woman Kerry Bockenholt at the helm.
Recently she opened the doors of her business, Kerry’s St. James Street Eatery, to a sold-out crowd intent on enjoying some great country music and Waterford’s own edition of ‘Hee Haw’ while supporting a great cause.
Kerry co-hosted Waterford’s take on the former TV show and it wasn’t long until all tickets were sold. The Dinner Variety Show, held Nov. 17 and Nov. 18, was presented in the style of the former Hee Haw TV show and there was no shortage of skits, music and tons of laughter!
There was a lot of pickin’ and grinnin’ and no shortage of laughs as the crowd relived the comedy of the former show. There was music, comedy and jokes – rather bad jokes – and tons of fun! It was a definite trip down memory lane for everyone. Add to this chili, buns and pie and you couldn’t have asked for more.
All of the amazing local performers donated their time and talent - such as it was. All proceeds went to the South Coast Community Caring for Cancer and the Norfolk Cancer Support and Resource Program. Representatives from the local cancer groups were recently on hand at Kerry’s St. James Street Eatery to accept the generous proceeds.
On hand to accept donations were Jessica Durka, herself a cancer survivor, as the founder of South Coast Community Caring for Cancer; Pat Tebbs, board member of Cancer Support Resources, and Daniel Fewings, co-coordinator and entertainer at the event. Also, of course, was the show’s host Kerry Bockrnholt.
Both Fewings and Durka are themselves cancer survivors. They had a vested interest in the show and they are, to say the least, forever grateful to all who attended and supported the cause. Fewings stated, “There’s nothing like a second chance,” and both he and Durka have been given that. He also said that he always tries to be positive. “I somehow got lucky and I wanted to give back.”
Recently the group gathered at Kerry’s for a cheque presentation and to catch up over coffee. It’s refreshing to see our community continues to show support for these great causes and we look forward to maybe… just maybe… another Hee Haw night next year. Thanks again!
