Firefighters recognized for years of service

Firefighting in South Huron runs in the family.

Two volunteer firefighters were presented with years of service awards at the recent South Huron council — Aaron Datars for 20 years of service and Doug Smith for 30 years.

Joining Aaron Datars for the presentation were his father, Peter Datars, and his brother Sam, who also serve on the fire department.

With fire department captain Doug Smith was his son, Will, also a member of the fire department.

Mayor George Finch praised the volunteer firefighters, noting they have selflessly placed themselves in harm’s way countless times to protect all of us, our families, and even complete strangers.

“While others are running away from danger, you are the ones running towards it,” said Finch. “We are a better place because of your loyalty, and of course we are eternally grateful that your family shares that same passion.”

South Huron fire chief Jeremy Becker said he wanted to especially thank the families of the volunteer firefighters.

“It is a huge commitment. They’ve definitely been a part.”
