Exeter Hawks rack up two wins over weekend

By Dan Rolph
The Exeter Hawks were back in action over the weekend, putting an end to a rough string of games and pulling off back-to-back wins.
The Hawks hosted the Port Stanley Sailors at the South Huron Recreation Centre Oct. 2 in what proved to be a lopsided affair.
The first frame was all Exeter with goals from Sam Consitt, Nate Schiedel and Henry Meulensteen in a period where the Hawks outshot the Sailors 21-5.
That momentum carried into the second when the Hawks scored two more goals before the Sailors got on the board with about six minutes left in the period. With the Hawks replying with a goal of their own, Exeter pushed into the third with a comfortable safety net.
Though the Sailors were first to score in the third, two more goals from Exeter got the Hawks over the finish line ahead 8-2.
The teams then had a rematch the following day on Oct. 3, where the Hawks continued their dominant streak in Port Stanley.
Exeter once again had a three-goal first period where they denied the Sailors an opportunity at scoring, but the teams had a seven-goal back-and-forth in a whirlwind of a second frame that left the game tied by the end of the period.
The third period was a different story as the Hawks closed the door on the Sailors while scoring four more goals, wrapping up the game 9-5 in Exeter’s favour.
The Hawks will be back on home ice in Exeter Oct. 9 when they host their Highway 4 rivals the Lucan Irish.
Lucan Irish find their footing with second win of the season
The Lucan Irish were in Parkhill Oct. 3 as they played the North Middlesex Stars.
The Stars were first on the board with two goals, but a goal from Kevin Waters, assisted by Matthew Rutledge and Weston Gower, had the Irish behind by a single goal by the end of the period.
The second period saw Lucan’s Owen Hey tie the game, but North Middlesex’s Dailen Fousek pushed the Stars ahead with five minutes left in that period.
A hard-fought third period goal by Zander Pino, assisted by Waters and Rutledge, put the teams neck-and neck once again.
But it was Lucan’s Cole Abbey who came in with the tie-breaker with eight minutes left in the frame — a lead that the Irish held onto until the match’s end, giving Lucan the 4-3 win.
Following their Oct. 9 game against the Exeter Hawks, the Lucan Irish will be at the East Elgin Community Complex on Oct. 10 to face off with the Aylmer Spitfires.
