County tweaks changes for waste collection

Norfolk will attempt to expand the number of condos that can receive municipal waste collection services when the new system comes online next month.
Coun. Adam Veri sought a reconsideration of a previous decision and managed to get an amendment approved that directs staff to continue municipal waste collection for condos on boulevards where feasible.
Calling waste collection a core service, Veri said there are several condo complexes in the municipality that front onto a boulevard where the service could continue when Norfolk switches to a new cart and automatic collection system.
“What I’m trying to accomplish is if there’s room on a public road, like Richardson Drive, where there’s a boulevard that makes this collection possible, I would like the service to continue,” he said.
“If we review it and it’s not possible then I’m not asking for that.”
The move to the new collection program required updated technical guidelines that areas must meet to be eligible for service. The new bins and trucks require additional space, and that makes some condo complexes tricky to service.
Council approved the technical guidelines earlier this year and then at the July council-in-committee meeting approved a staff report that pointed out 28 condo corporations won’t receive the municipal service under the new system. That would be a continuation for some, who have already utilized private services. However, there were five corporations that applied for continued municipal service but were denied under the new guidelines.
