COP BRIEFS: Man allegedly found intoxicated trespassing in restricted area Northumberland OPP station

Northumberland OPP has laid charges in several separate investigations after a recent RIDE check, an alleged theft from a store and a trespassing incident involving an impaired individual at the Cobourg OPP Detachment.


Here’s your latest OPP rundown.


TRESPASSING:


On Sept. 29, at about 4 p.m., officers said they found an intoxicated individual in a restricted area of the Northumberland OPP Detachment property on Division Street in Cobourg.


The person had recently arrived in Cobourg through public transport then proceeded on foot on Division Street, said police.


As a result of the investigation, police said a 37-year-old Brantford man was arrested and charged with being intoxicated in a public place and enter premises when entry prohibited.


The alleged incident has prompted Northumberland OPP to issue a reminder to the public to adhere to all posted signage regarding restricted areas at OPP facilities.


Members of the public needing help are asked to use the designated public entrance where a telephone is also available for additional inquiries, explained police.


THEFT FROM STORE:


On Sept. 30, 2026, shortly before 4 p.m., police said they received a report that an individual had stolen a power tool from a business on Grand Road in the Municipality of Trent Hills.


The person left prior to police arriving at the scene, but officers said they obtained a description of the individual and continued their investigation.


As a result of the probe, an individual was identified and arrested on Oct. 1, 2026, reported OPP.

The accused is a 53-year-old Campbellford man was who was charged with theft under $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in January 2027, said police.


RIDE CHECK:

On Sept. 29, shortly after midnight, officers were conducting a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check on the Hwy. 401 eastbound off-ramp to Ontario Street in the Municipality of Port Hope.


Police said they observed a vehicle appear to avoid the RIDE check and subsequently conducted a traffic stop on Hamilton Road.


After speaking with the driver, officers initiated an impaired driving investigation, which resulted in the individual being arrested, said OPP. Further investigation allegedly revealed additional offences.


As a result of the investigation, police said a 43-year-old Clarington resident was charged with operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus,) driving a motor vehicle not equipped with an interlock device, driving while under suspension, and being a novice driver with a B.A.C. (blood alcohol concentration) above zero.



Police stated the accused is due in Cobourg court in November.


In addition to being dished out a future court date, a 90-day licence suspension and a 45-day vehicle impoundment were imposed, added OPP.
