Cobourg starts search for new deputy police chief

The hunt is on to find a new deputy chief for the Cobourg Police Service.
The Cobourg Police Service Board announced the launch of its recruitment process to fill the position left vacant by former Deputy Chief Jeff Haskins on Wednesday.
The board described the position as a key executive leadership role within the service.
“The position opened on Aug. 5, 2026, with applications being accepted until Aug. 29, 2026,” said the board. “Reporting directly to the chief of police, the deputy chief will provide strategic leadership and oversight for human resources, finance, the business services unit, the V13 Policetech Accelerator, and the criminal investigations bureau.”
In the detailed job description, the business services unit is also described as a criminal record check business that “manages a multi-million-dollar revenue and a significant component of the service’s business operations.”
Board leadership described the ideal candidate as “an accomplished active-duty police leader with a strong business background, demonstrated leadership experience and a commitment to public service.”
Officials also noted that the successful candidate will be tasked with contributing to organizational strategy, governance and operational excellence, as well as acting as chief in Chief of Police Chris Leather’s absence.

Meanwhile, just las week, Leather told the Independent that he and the board were aligned in stabilizing command and filling this position, as well as others, and shared hopes the service would be able to round out the team sooner than later.
“We hope to have the deputy (chief) in place by September-October, depending on where they’re coming from, as well as on the operational side, a new inspector will be taking up a position there as well to help stabilize and repurpose command with the Cobourg police,” Leather told the Independent.
Leather just had his official swearing-in ceremony on July 23 and took over the helm of the service on June 1, 2026.
