Cobourg’s Sheri Perkins, Lynn Bryans secure bronze at bowling championships

Cobourg’s Sheri Perkins and Lynn Bryans have secured bronze medals after the Ontario Ladies’ Novice Pairs Championships hosted at the Cobourg Lawn Bowling club over the weekend.

Club President Bill Arthur said the women’s provincial championships two-day event hosted Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16 brought 16 teams from across the province to compete at the clubhouse.

The Port Credit Lawn Bowling Club team comprised of Meghan McFayden and Bethany McFayden ended up taking home the gold, while silver went to the Lambeth Lawn Bowling Club team made up of Ann Stubbins and Sandra Martone.  

The women’s provincial pairs event brought together all novice bowlers, several of whom it was either their first-time ever competing, or their last after five years in this category.

Northumberland-Peterborough South MP David Piccini and Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland helped kick-off the championships as part of an opening ceremony Saturday morning.

Arthur previously told the Independent that the Ontario Lawn Bowls Association is split into 16 districts, with all the teams qualifying from playdowns in their own district before Cobourg hosted the championships. Cobourg is in district 14.

On Saturday, teams competed in round robin play and then the top teams in the four groups qualified for elimination play Sunday. More than 30 women competed in Cobourg this weekend.

The Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club’s roots go back about 120 years.
