Touted as “a proven policing leader,” the Cobourg Police Service Board officially announced Wednesday (Oct. 7) it has selected superintendent Tina Maier as the next deputy chief of Cobourg Police Service.

With more than 30 years experience, deputy chief-designate Maier will be joining the service following the conclusion of her role with OPP, where she currently serves as superintendent and bureau commander of the security bureau. In that position, she oversees the OPP’s general headquarters detachment, Queen’s Park detachment, justice officials protection and investigations section, security assessment unit, and security enquiries unit. She is responsible for strategic security planning, organizational risk management, security screening standards, and the protection of government assets, infrastructure and public officials.

“The board conducted an extensive search for a proven policing leader who could help guide the future of our organization, and we are proud to welcome Tina Maier to Cobourg,” said Adam Bureau, police service board chair, in a statement. “Superintendent Maier brings exceptional operational experience, strategic leadership and a demonstrated commitment to community safety, member wellness and organizational excellence.”

In his remarks at the press conference, Bureau said: “Tina’s leadership style reflects the values we want to see in our organization – integrity, collaboration, innovation, accountability, and a commitment to people.”

Her appointment as the first female command officer in the service’s history is significant, said Bureau.

“This reflects not only Tina’s exceptional qualifications but also the continued growth and evolution of our organization.”

Starting her policing career in Petrolia and Peterborough, Maier went on to serve as a detective and online undercover operator within the child sexual exploitation unit before advancing through several senior leadership roles.

Throughout her career, she has led major provincial initiatives and specialized teams within the organized crime enforcement bureau, provincial anti-terrorism section, provincial traffic operations and security bureau, noted CPS.

Prior to her current role, she served as superintendent of the OPP’s healthy workplace team where she led the development and implementation of extensive member wellness and mental health programs.

“Tina’s career reflects a combination of operational experience, leadership and innovation,” said CPS Chief Chris Leather. “Her background in major investigations, public safety initiatives and member wellness will be a tremendous asset to our organization. I look forward to working with her as we continue building a modern and community-focused police service.”

Maier graduated with a bachelor of arts degree with honours from York University and has completed executive leadership programs, including the global policing innovation exchange, Rotman School of Management executive police leadership program and leading transformational change. She is also the recipient of the Women’s Leadership Award and a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, one of the highest honours in Canadian policing.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be chosen for this role,” said Maier.

“I am excited to join (CPS) and work alongside Chief Leather, the police service board, and the dedicated members of the organization as we continue to advance the service’s commitment to community safety, public trust and organizational excellence.”

Maier will officially assume her duties in Cobourg on Nov. 2.
